Well somehow I thought I was getting off on the right foot with blogging at the beginning of the year but I really fell off the deep end after 10 whole days! I will try to be better about updating the blog here in the new year! I update the class Facebook quite often so I will try to share more than just pictures here!

Last Friday was our first day back and it was a great day! The kids came in and were excited to be back at school! We started the day with a little introduction game and we practiced saying everyone's names.

We went over a few procedures and talked about expectations in different areas of the building. Then before we knew it, it was time for lunch! Yes, we eat lunch at 10am! It seems very early but let me tell you...I had multiple kids ask when it was time for lunch by 9! Also, starting next week, the school will be providing an afternoon snack for the kids.

We read several books, including Elmer and Splat the Cat!

Today the kids came back to school ready to start our first full week. We went over the classroom rules and I introduced them to Class Dojo...not sure what that is? Ask your child! Or you can check the Parent Handbook I sent home today. I will also go over it a little more in-depth at Back to School Night which is August 14th at 6pm.

We started Reader's Workshop and Writer's Workshop this morning and the kids worked great! They read quietly for 4 minutes which is great for the first day. We talked about how our brains need to exercise in order to build up that stamina! Hopefully by the end of the week, we can spend 10 minutes reading! They also did great writing! They spent almost 10 minutes working on their pictures as well as writing a story to go with it.

During math we were introduced to calendar time and we practiced counting our numbers to 20 by watching this fun video:

This week we will practice reading, counting, and writing numbers to 30.

A new school year is quickly approaching! Teachers report back next Wednesday and our students' first day is on Friday! I have been busy getting my room ready over summer vacation because I have decided that after 7 years I was ready to clear out my jungle theme!

I have been putting in the hours turning this...

into this...

I bought a gray rug from Lowe's for $18 and five colors of <strike>duct</strike> wannabe duct tape. (I do not recommend buying the 3M tape that fakes you out and poses as duct tape. I have a feeling it won't make it past the first week.) I am really excited to have this rug because all the kids will know exactly where to sit!

This little corner is definitely where it's at! I have my birthday display above my reader's workshop board. I have my calendar display covering up my chalkboard (hope all the tape lasts!) which is next to my Lakeshore reading chart. This chart holds the reading strategy, word wall words, and spelling words. My students use this chart all the time!

I am so glad I moved my guided reading area across the room! I am now away from my giant bookshelf which always became the place to stuff/stack/hide things. Now I just have one shelf by me but it is full of my guided reading essentials. I also love the dry erase board behind my chair as well as my new blend posters! I have some word solving posters on the yellow board and I will be hanging up reading strategies above those soon!

My group leader frames! I bought 5 of these a while back and I found one more at Michael's today. It will have to do until my mom can bring me another one since Ikea is 2 hours away...and let's face it, a $1 frame isn't worth the drive, no matter how bad this will annoy me! Also, you can get these signs for free in my TPT shop here.

It's so bright and fun! I am loving the progress so far! I have a little more to do, mostly just straightening up but I am so happy to have finally decided to change themes!

My mom (who lives in California) was in town for three weeks earlier this summer and she helped me do a few things in my room. She created the chevron bulletin board which I LOVE! She also created the bulletin board in the hallway where I display student work.

To create this masterpiece, we browsed Pinterest for some cute chalkboard welcome signs and a ribbon banner. Then we measured the width of my bulletin board and tore some black butcher paper to the correct size and taped it to my white board. Then we used my projector to shine it on the paper and my mom traced the welcome sign in chalk. She filled in the letters with different patterns. She did the same thing for the year banner at the top. My name, room number, grade, and pennants in the corners are all freehand drawings. I sprayed the chalk drawings with some hairspray to help hold it on all year. We'll see how that goes! Did I mention my mom was an art teacher for 15 years? Love when she can help in my room :)

I plan on getting everything ready hopefully this Friday because Tuesday night the first grade has "Meet the Teacher Night!"

The next thing on my list is a blog makeover! Hopefully I will get to that soon...but my to-do list is still kind of long!

Today we read There was an Old Lady who Swallowed Some Leaves. She swallows all the parts needed to make a scarecrow. Afterwards we created our own scarecrows! This was a good activity to practice good listening skills!

We also practiced writing numbers in expanded form. Then we placed our number cards of sweet treats in order from smallest to largest which was a good skill to practice.

As we wrap up basic place value this week we did rotations using school supplies! Each station had a group of objects (pencils, popsicle sticks, links, etc). First the students had to make groups of tens and ones. Then they had to record on their sheet those numbers and come up with the total amount. They did a great job creating the groups of ten and counting them!

During reading Mrs. Perry came to visit while we read three stories and tried to determine the author's purpose. We read The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig, Pigs, and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. The kids had a trifold to check off the traits the three books had. Then we built this chart to show our learning.

Well we have been in school for 66 days now! In those 66 days a lot has happened! I mentioned back in July that Miss Szabo would be starting the year while I was still on maternity leave. Well Mrs. Ayers also taught for a few weeks when Miss Szabo got a job at Garden City. I have been back since fall break and I really think the kids have adjusted pretty well!

My first week back we went to Eagle Creek and learned a lot about Indiana insects and animals.

It was great to see the after what felt forever! We also had a really great day! Everyone was on green and we didn’t waste any time remembering procedures. I hope we continue having such good days!

This week is only four days so we are going to be working hard on our spelling words as well as our word wall words. This week’s spelling list is somewhat hard. We are working on verbs with ed and ing endings. Make sure you help your child pay attention to which words double the final consonant. Not all of them do! The word wall words are all review words but we chose them because they are the ones students have struggled with the most.

We got so much done today that I saved a fun activity for the end of the day! I found out what I will be having in April and I made it into a little prediction activity! First the students chose either the word boy or girl and colored it. They also colored a baby. They glued their word on a class chart to show how they all voted. Then they glued their baby on a page and wrote three predictions. The guessed the gender, hair color, and eye color.

Most of the kids picked their own gender but as it turns out, we're having a boy!

Over the winter break I had a small party with my family and friends to reveal our baby’s gender.

We have been getting into the holiday spirit in Room 37!

Starting December 3rd (because the 1st was a weekend), the kids have been counting down the days until Christmas! Every day they glue a cotton ball onto Santa’s beard. His beard is already halfway filled!

We also turned ourselves into elves! The children completed Elf Applications and then created their costumes.

Today we read the book Santa’s Stuck. The children then showed Santa stuck in their chimney and wrote how they would get him out!
Next Friday is our party! I sent home a note asking for a $1 or $2 donation so I can purchase some goodies! (It’s easier for me to get a variety of things than end up with all the same things!) If can send in your donation by Wednesday, that would be great.
I also sent a note home asking for donations of clean, glass jars (that have a matching lid). I have a surprise for the kids and would love some help getting these jars! Send them in if you have them :)

I haven’t updated in a while! Since my last post, we have had a lot of things happen! We had two students that moved and we had four new students join us! We welcomed Jayla, DJ, Daeton, and Joshua! We learned all about the life cycle of an apple and also an apple tree. We made tissue paper trees to show the changes the apple trr goes through during each season. I forgot to take a picture of the students' trees but this is what they look like.

This past Tuesday was Patriot Day, in rememberance of September 11th. As a class we read the book, The Man who Walked Between Two Towers. This is a really good book because it gives children some background knowledge about the Twin Towers and NYC. This is really important because as you know, your child was born after this terrible tragedy. We discussed in very simple terms why we remember this day and the servicemen and women that we give our respect to. We also made an American flag to wear during silent dismissal.

One sweet spot for Patriot Day was during recess when we got to the playground to find this little cutie:

This little kitten wanted to play with the first graders so badly! He ran towards the playground several times before I finally decided to catch him and take him to Mr. Coapstick. In case you don't know, I have two cats myself and love kittens! So I just couldn't leave it out in the wild! We kept it in our classroom (in a contained crate) until the end of the day. Mrs. States took him home and is currently looking for a home for him. Our class named him Boo because he is black and reminded them of Halloween!

This week we finially started doing reading stations!! The kids have been waiting so patiently to begin this time. It is always a favorite time of day every year because the kids get to work in small groups doing many different games or activities. A few of the stations we do are computer:

and vowel matching:

We also do many other stations like listening center, reading corner, magnetic words, spelling, and several others. I know they'll be just as excited when we start getting to add in math stations! Ask your child which stations they did today!

Today we read There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. The old lady swallowed a fly first and then she swallowed many other animals! How absurd! We used some picture clues and created our own mini versions of this story. Check out two of them below:

http://youtu.be/2Qcmj9eiikc

http://youtu.be/C4yLJomQbSg

Leslie Reedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01696665465066508821noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3650121713552288438.post-52044270653525333012012-08-13T14:48:00.000-04:002013-07-17T23:10:27.082-04:00Book Club

Today I sent home a flyer for the Scholastic Book Club! Every month I will send a flyer home like this. You can browse the flyer or online for books for your child at home. You can order online by clicking the Scholastic Book Club picture on the right hand side (using the class code GLNZD). You can also order using the flyer I sent home and turn it in with cash, check, or money order. Scholastic offers great books as well as freebies for our class! Let me know if you have any questions!

Leslie Reedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01696665465066508821noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3650121713552288438.post-36671475537548131322012-08-03T17:46:00.000-04:002013-07-17T23:10:27.077-04:00First Day!
Well the first day has come and gone...and boy am I tired! Here is a quick rundown of what we did today (because I'm sure it might be too much to remember!):

First the students came in and found their desks. They had a few back to school pages to work on as their classmates came in. Then we went through the supplies! From the minute they walked in, they were ready to get them out! If you are in need of a supply list, go to the parent info tab above and click on supply list. I hope everyone can have their supplies in by Wednesday.

After the giant task of supplies, we practiced hallway and stairway procedures. Now that your child is on the lower level at CGE, they will be using the stairs a lot! We don't want any injuries, so we practiced safety! We also checked out the cafeteria to find our table.

When we came back from our quick tour, we read First Day Jitters. We talked about the different feelings that children and teachers might have on the first day and made a class chart. Then each student created a picture of their face showing their feelings on the first day. I forgot to take a picture of the chart we made - I'll try to add it later. Most of the children were happy and excited to begin first grade!

I then took a picture of each student because we use pictures for quite a few things and they always look so nice on the first day :) Then it was time for lunch! Boy were they hungry - even at 10:50! Recess came next and it was a hot one!

Next we got to meet Owen, the class tortoise. Owen was pretty outgoing and really seemed to like Vincent. He crawled towards him three times in a row!

We then went to specials class. There are only four special classes but we have five first grades, which means I divide up my class into four groups and they go with another class. I will be sending home the schedule Monday so you know where your child goes everyday.

We finished the day by making a short book about first grade! We also took a class picture. Look at all those smiling faces!

Have a great weekend and get lots of sleep for our busy week next week!

Leslie Reedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01696665465066508821noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3650121713552288438.post-13846839520363100942012-07-19T20:13:00.000-04:002013-07-17T23:10:27.071-04:00Preparing for August!Well the end of summer is quickly approaching! Teachers head back to school on August 1st and students will begin another year on Friday, August 3rd. I am really excited to meet my new group and hope that you are ready for a fun year!

I have visited the classroom a couple times this week to get it straightened back out. I would take more pictures but it isn't clean enough for the world to see :) Here are a few sneak peeks:

I probably need one more day and I will have it ready for my new students! Tomorrow though, I am off to Chicago for a conference with a few of the other first grade teachers. Hope I learn some good stuff for this year! See you soon!

Leslie Reedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01696665465066508821noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3650121713552288438.post-57663408326452943052012-04-01T09:18:00.000-04:002013-07-17T23:10:27.065-04:00Kite DayLast week we read the story The Kite: Days with Frog and Toad. To celebrate the last day before spring break (and to have a little fun), first grade had Kite Day at the end of Friday. Thursday night was full of rain and storms so I was afraid it might not happen. Friday however, was great weather! Many kids brought kites and I brought a few as well. We went outside and after I showed them quickly how to get their kite up and away, they were off! The wind wasn't too great; it kept coming in short spurts. Several kids got a few good runs in though! The first grade teachers quickly realized that there were too many of us out at once but it wasn't too bad. They all seemed to have lots of fun!

http://youtu.be/EraqAv-e0zsLeslie Reedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01696665465066508821noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3650121713552288438.post-18764062769662637592012-02-19T18:25:00.000-05:002013-07-17T23:10:27.059-04:00Happy Valentine's Day
I'm a little late but better late than never :)

Last Tuesday was Valentine's Day and boy was it fun! One of the quotes from the end of the day went something like this: "This was the best party I've ever had!"

We started the day by making special Valentine's for our 6th grade reading buddies in Mr. Clouse's class. They were several steps involved and the kids listen great! Aren't these cute?!

We also decorated our bags to hold Valentine's from our friends. The kids also made a very special Valentine for their parents. I forgot to take pictures the rest of the day but here is apicture of what they look (somewhat) like:

We finished the day with our party! The class had fun cupcakes and fruit punch. They also passed their Valentine's out. We also danced a little to some Kidz Bop while reading the Valentine's cards. It was a really fun day!

Leslie Reedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01696665465066508821noreply@blogger.com0
