Wordle

Wednesday afternoon we took another trip down to the computer lab. Earlier in the day we had worked on adjectives. Each student chose one noun to describe. They needed 20 different adjectives describing their one noun. That was not an easy task! Later, they went to the website Wordle. Their creations came out looking very cool! Here are a few examples:

Soon we will be finishing our autobiography projects! I can't wait to post some of the videos!

Check out our new addition!

I have started another addition to our blog called The Students Writings. This is a place where the students do the blogging! Every day a different student will write on the blog. Some days it might be a free write, some days I will start a prompt, and some days I might even ask a question and have multiple students respond.

Be sure to check the new blog often because it will be updated frequently!

Nouns, Nouns, and More Nouns!

These past few weeks we have been working on parts of speech; particularly nouns, verbs, and adjectives. We have made class posters explaining the definition and creating examples.

Last week we reviewed nouns by making 4 posters with pictures cut out from magazines. One poster each for people, places, things, and animals. Check out the final products below:

Check back later this week for our adjective projects!

Upcoming Events

All Scholastic Book orders are due today! If you have a last minute order you order online by going here. If you had planned on buying anything but forgot, just give me a call and I can wait another day.

Yesterday I sent home a field trip survey. We would like to take a field trip to the zoo in April. Unfortunately it is $9 a student. Please fill out the survey and send it back to me so all the teachers can discuss as a grade level. We know this is expensive and don't want to leave kids out!

Book Reports are due Friday, January 29th! Please make sure both the diorama and report sheet are filled out and brought to school! I can't wait to see what your child creates!

Don't forget that next Wednesday there is no school! It is a staff development day :)

If you would like to see old newsletters or book report forms, check out the class website!

Personal Narratives Videos

This week the kids will be working on writing personal narratives. We will work on the whole writing process such as a prewriting, editing, rough drafts, and publishing. The part I am most excited about it that this involves a lot of technology!

Today we started our prewrites. The kids all logged onto a computer and used a software program called Kidspiration. This program is really cool because the kids can make webs that help them organize their ideas. We will continue working on our webs tomorrow and then we will move on to our rough drafts! After they have written their first draft and had a peer editor check it, they will revise their work. After another round of edits (with me!) they will be ready to publish!

Most of the time publishing means typing it or writing it on cool fancy paper. Not this time! Hopefully by the end of next week all the kids will have recorded themselves reading their narratives on Audacity. After they have recorded their story they will turn it into a video on Windows Movie Maker. They will have sounds and even pictures in their video! After we have all completed our published piece I will create a class DVD that all they parents can have!

You can check out the sample video I made on the class website under Podcasts.
