Spring Break

Kid Blogs
Last week I introduced the kids to the website kidblog. I showed them all this blog and talked about how a blog is sort of like an online journal. I set up each child in the room with their own blog. I like this site a lot for a few reasons. One, there are no ads!! Second, it is completely monitored and controlled by me. Third, it is only accessible through a password. I will be sending home the parent login after spring break. Or you can login as the parent here and ask your child for the password :) They were so excited to see their own work online as well as their classmates! Feel free to have your child add to their blog over spring break!

Author Visit
Last Thursday Chapel Glen was treated to a special guest for all the kids in kindergarten, first, and second grade. Susan Eddy, a clay illustrator, came to speak to the children. She shared her book, Papa Fish's Lullaby, and showed some of her work. She talked about how she made the clay illustrations for each page and she even showed the kids to of her actual pages from the book. After her presentation, all the kids received their own clay kits to make an ocean scene from clay.

Measure Around the Room
For the last two weeks we have been working on measurement. We started off measuring with nonstandard units like paper clips and unifix cubes. Then we learned about the rules and how it has inches and centimeters. We also learned where to start measuring and how to round up or down an inch. Then we started measuring in inches and centimeters! The first day we started measuring with standard units, the kids had a list of measurements to find around the classroom. Here they are on their hunt:

Teaching with Skype
On Monday, Mrs. Deaton's class and our class were so lucky to have a special visitor through Skype. If you don't know what Skype is, you check out their website. In a quick sentence, Skype is making phone calls through the internet but using video additionally! We had an art teacher, who is also my mom :) teach the kids how to make origami cats and dogs. Ms. Gatling lives in California and teaches at California State in Long Beach. She teaches students that are going to college to become art teachers. The kids LOVED their first Skype lesson!

Student Treasures!
There is a book publishing company called Student Teasures. For the last three years I have participated in this program. For participate, you must have your students write and illustrate a book. For first grade, I have the students create one class book that each child has one page in. This year the title will be Fruits and Vegetables A to Z. It was nice to incorporate our writing and learning with the nutrition speaker that was visiting us.
Well, Mrs Deaton's class actually is writing their own fruit and vegetable book as well. So we decided that we wanted our students to try some of the fruits and veggies that most children have not tried (or even Mrs. Reed!!). So I went to the store and found several of the fruits and veggies that we were writing about. Check out some of the videos below to see what the kids liked.
