Happy Holidays!

Last Friday was our last day before winter break. We finished up our holiday gift bags. I hope you enjoyed the Christmas card and ornament as well as the snowman picture frame, complete with your child's Santa picture! We also graphed winter marshmallows. We made a tally chart, a pictograph, and a bar graph. Then the children read their graphs to answer a few questions and make fractions.

We also had caroling in the morning and I was so glad to see so many family members come! Kids love to show off for their family members so it's nice when you are able to make time to come in to school.

During recess we watched Polar Express which is a huge favorite in the class! Then we had our holiday party! Thank you all for sending in your dollar to contribute to the party fund! The kids loved their parfaits! They had a choice of strawberry or vanilla yogurt and three toppings to choose from: strawberries, blueberries, and peaches (or even a mixture of all of them!). They got to finish them off by added in some extra crunchy granola!

After their treats the kids got to open their present from me. Boy were they excited!

I hope you all have a great break and a Merry Christmas!

Holiday Family Night

Tuesday night we had our second Family Celebration! We had 207 people in attendance which was an improvement from the fall Family Night, which had 206 :) The first graders started the night by telling the audience a little about each of the holidays we studied. They also sang a song they learned to go with the holidays. Here is a quick part of the Hannukah song:

After the presentation, families joined in the cafeteria for holiday snacks! There were so many different desserts to choose from. I had my eye on the Oreo desserts! Students shared their projects that had worked on the week prior with each other and their familes. I heard so many family members talking to each other saying how nice it was to finally meet. That is one of the main reasons we have these fun nights. We love to see our students' parents, but it is also nice for you family members to meet each other :)

Enjoy some pictures from the rest of the evening:

Thank you all for coming out!!

Holiday Rotations

Last week and this past Monday the students were given a holiday passport and sent on an adventure! Each class visited all six first grade classes to learn about a different winter holiday:

Chinese New Year

Diwali

Hannukah

Navidad

Kwanza

Christmas

(I'll post this picture tomorrow! Oops!)

The kids loved getting to visit each teacher and learning about a new holiday as well as making a related craft and learning a song. All of this work came together at our Family Night on Tuesday.

Practicing long vowel words at home will really help your child this next semester!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today we celebrated Thanksgiving several ways! We started the morning by creating festive Pilgrim or Native American hats. Then we had a first grade Thanksgiving sing along. I only got a quick snippet of them singing about a  turkey named Bingo:

Then we went back to the room to prepare our very own butter for our Thanksgiving feast that afternoon. Each kid got to shake the jar of whipping cream for one minute while they jammed to KidzBop (for inspiration!). Brayden had some good moves:

Then we all made our own Thanksgiving placemats with hand turkeys. After lunch and (inside) recess, it was time to feast! There was SO MUCH good food!

This week sure was fun!

Turkey Time!

Last week, all the first graders recieved a feather to add to the first grade turkey. On their feather they wrote what they were thankful for. Our class had purple feathers. Take a look:

Today, the kids got to make their own turky to hang from our ceiling. First, they had to cut out all the pieces. Then they painted the turkey head, wings, and body. Finally, they assembled their Thanksgiving Turkey:

The finished products:

If you enter our room this week, beware of a giant flock!
