Happy Thanksgiving!

Today we celebrated Thanksgiving several ways! We started the morning by creating festive Pilgrim or Native American hats. Then we had a first grade Thanksgiving sing along. I only got a quick snippet of them singing about a  turkey named Bingo:

Then we went back to the room to prepare our very own butter for our Thanksgiving feast that afternoon. Each kid got to shake the jar of whipping cream for one minute while they jammed to KidzBop (for inspiration!). Brayden had some good moves:

Then we all made our own Thanksgiving placemats with hand turkeys. After lunch and (inside) recess, it was time to feast! There was SO MUCH good food!

This week sure was fun!

Turkey Time!

Last week, all the first graders recieved a feather to add to the first grade turkey. On their feather they wrote what they were thankful for. Our class had purple feathers. Take a look:

Today, the kids got to make their own turky to hang from our ceiling. First, they had to cut out all the pieces. Then they painted the turkey head, wings, and body. Finally, they assembled their Thanksgiving Turkey:

The finished products:

If you enter our room this week, beware of a giant flock!

They also really enjoy the estimation and computation stations!

Shapes

Last week we started learning about plane shapes. We focused mainly on squares, triangles, circles, and rectangles.

This week we will explore pentagons, hexagons, and octagons. We will also study solid shapes, focusing on cubes, spheres, cones, and cylinders. Can you have your child identify any of the shapes we have talked about in real life? Help them post a comment for a Gold Ticket!

Jack-o-lanterns

For Halloween the kids "carved" their very own jack-o-lanterns! Behing their smiling or scary faces they wrote about their pumpkin. They each named their jack-o-lantern and wrote three descriptive sentences.

Can you guess their names?

We also graphed candy corn! Yummy!

Check out our new document camera that we received from Donors Choose:

Family Celebration!

Last Thursday first grade held its first Family Celebration! We showcased the chidrens' science projects in the gym while all the first grade families ate in the cafeteria. We also had a slideshow of field trip pictures showing in the gym. All six first grade classes had families attend with a grand total of 207 people in attendance! WOW! Overall, our class had 10 students show up and it was awesome to see them all there! We loved seeing all students as well as their extended families in a fun atmosphere!

We were lucky enough to have 65 pumpkins donated so that each first grader could take home their own. The district also donated 3 computers to be raffled off! Each family brought in a food dish of their choice and it all looked so delicious! There was so much going on that I didn't get as many pictures as I hoped but enjoy the few I did take:

Here are the computer winners! Congrats Gwyn!

Thank you to all the families that came out! It was a little hectic but we saw the kids' smiling faces all night long :) Now that we have experienced the first event and received feedback forms from families in attendance, we can being planning our next event for December! It will be different in many ways and we really hope you can attend!
